Job details:
Justice Centres Uganda(JCU) is a Project of the Justice Law and Order Sector (JLOS) hosted and supervised by the Judiciary to provide legal aid. JCU operates through Centres that provide a wide range of services that include Legal Representation, Alternative Dispute Resolution,Legal Advice, support with Self representation, Psycho-Social Support and Legal Awareness and Sensitization, as well as Advocacy for reform of Laws and negative practices. Justice Centres Uganda operates offices in Kampala, Tororo, Lira, FortPortal, Masaka, Hoima,
Kasese, Rukungiri, Mbale, Mubende and Mukono; and seeks to recruit competent dynamic and creative individuals to join her team of passionate Access to Justice Advocacy Professionals in the following position:
LEGAL OFFICERS ( 19 POSITIONS):
(Lira, Tororo,Mmengo, Hoima, Kasese, Mbale, Mubende, Rukungiri, Mukono)
The Legal Officer will be under the direct supervision of the Justice Centre Manager; will work with a team of Legal Assistants, Paralegals, Pyschosocials and Legal Volunteers.
In Particular, the Legal Officer will:
  • Provide legal advice and counselling to clients.
  • Provide technical support for the development of an outreach and advocacy strategy by the JC.
  • Oversee and supervise paralegals and community volunteers.
  • Undertake community outreach sessions.
  • Run the Mobile Legal Aid Clinic.
  • Conduct training sessions for key stake holders and communities in human rights issues.
  • Represent clients in court.
  • Undertake research and document lessons and results.
  • Prepare regular work plans and reports.
  • Participate in weekly in house training sessions.
Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from an accredited Institution.
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice; be an Enrolled Advocate MUST of the High Court with a VALID Practicing Certificate.
  • Minimum of 3-4 years’ relevant experience in legal practice/ Court room experience
  • At least one year’s experience in provision of Legal Aid Services either as a regular staff or Volunteer in a professional setting.
Required Competencies:
  • Proven experience working on legal aid issues and /or legal aid organizations.
  • Dedication to working for and with the poor.
  • Proficiency in both Oral and Written English is essential
  • A sound understanding of access to justice and the working of the JLOS institutions.
  • Lobbying & Advocacy skills.
  • Experience with mediation.
  • Proven appreciation of human rights issues.
  •  Willingness to supervise legal volunteers and paralegals.
  • Ability to mobilize communities and work with volunteers.
  • Proven team building and management skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Proven training and facilitation skills.
Age: 25-35 Years.
